I was chatting with a friend today about sending flowers to someone in grief. It was interesting for us to note the possible contradiction in sending someone grieving flowers. If we send someone flowers when they experience joy or happiness, it is assumed appropriate and the flowers are welcomed. They add to the person’s day and may increase their joy or happiness. If we send someone flowers when they feel sadness, the flowers are meant to bring some happiness to their day, or even a smile.
Grief, however, is different. We aren’t taught grief in school. How to either support someone in grief or feel through our own grief.
Do we send flowers even though they may trigger the recipient and spin them out? Do we send flowers to let the person know we are thinking of them through their grief? That we recognize and sit with them?
My answer, yes!
